Join the LA Tenants Union!
Get Involved. Pay Dues.
We must fight mass eviction with mass membership.
By joining the union as a dues-paying member, not only do you help sustain the financial health of our volunteer-powered grassroots movement – you actively amplify our demands, bolster our numbers, and fight for the human right to housing in Los Angeles and beyond. Every cent of your membership dues go directly to LATU’s operational expenses: ensuring we have bilingual interpretation, securing meeting space, printing, banner making, event catering, and more. We also oversee mutual aid initiatives that support members engaging in rent strikes and other forms of direct action on an as-needed basis.
We’re member funded so we can be member led. Our autonomy as an organization is a key source of our strength, and so we do not fundraise through foundations or governmental agencies that might strive to neutralize our radical goals in exchange for financial assistance.
We encourage anyone organizing with the Union to register as a member and begin a recurring pledge. For unemployed members, that pledge is just $1 per month, or $12 per year. For employed members, we request a commitment of $5 (or more) per month, or $60 (or more) per year. Employed members are encouraged to commit as much as they can.
Who can become a member?
We encourage all tenants in Los Angeles to join our movement. By “tenant,” we mean anyone who does not own or control their housing situation. This includes, but is not limited to, rent-paying individuals, people who depend upon family members for housing, Section 8 tenants, public housing tenants, tenants of senior housing, students in dormitory housing, incarcerated individuals, and individuals without indoor housing. We also welcome homeowners as non-voting members.
What happens after I join?
You’ll receive a welcome email directing you to a webpage listing the meeting times of the local chapter nearest to you. The main place our work happens is within each local chapter. All we ask is that you show up, get to know your neighbors, and find ways to take on new projects and support the organizing work that’s already happening! It’s really that easy.
We also hold monthly Escuelitas, or schools, every third weekend of the month. Escuelitas foster camaraderie across locals and orient new members to the union while building critical organizing capacities through skill-sharing and dialogue.
I’m not based in Los Angeles. Can I still support your work?
We welcome solidarity memberships from comrades who live outside the Los Angeles area, and encourage you to sign-up for a recurring contribution at the level you see fit.
If you would prefer, you can make a one-time donation.
